Restore Chesapeake Bay Funding

The House of Delegates has proposed eliminating the funding for agricultural best management practices. This money provides Virginia's farmers with the resources they need to reduce pollution entering the bay. Take action today, and tell your Delegate to restore funding for best management practices today.

This spring, the Senate is set to consider legislation that has the potential to finally restore the Chesapeake Bay. One of the keys to success for this legislation is support from Virginia’s senators, but so far, they are sitting on the fence.

Letter * Dear Sens. Warner and Webb, The Chesapeake Bay is one of Virginia's most important natural resources and needs to be protected. Unfortunately, for the past 25 years we have relied on voluntary goals to reduce pollution entering the bay. The result has been a decline in the oysters and blue crabs that call the bay home, and a dead zone that covers more than one-third of the waterway in the summer. For these reasons, I would like for you to cosponsor the Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act (S. 1816) that was introduced by Sen. Ben Cardin last fall. This bill provides a comprehensive approach to cleaning up the bay and establishes, for the first time, a firm deadline for implementing bay restoration activities. Message * More than 14,000 Virginians (including me) have joined together to stand up to the most dangerous predator in the Chesapeake Bay. Who is this fearsome creature? Try the chicken. A single chicken isn't too fierce. But when 300 million of these cluckers gang together along the Eastern Shore of the Bay, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, ospreys, herons and other waterfowl don't stand a chance. Those 300 million chickens drop about 1 billion pounds of it each year, fouling everyone's nest in the Bay. When rainfall washes the waste into the Bay, algae goes wild, oxygen levels sink, and wildlife suffer. Most summers, up to one-third of the Bay becomes a biological dead zone.
