No Drilling Off Our Coasts

Virginia’s coast is in jeopardy. Oil companies, with the help of the previous administration, are one step closer to drilling off our shores. But we already know drilling off Virginia's coasts would be a drop in the bucket.

Governor Kaine needs to hear your voice. Tell him to stand up for our oceans and the Chesapeake Bay by speaking against offshore drilling.

Environment Virginia is doing two things right now to stop drilling off our coasts:

* First, we are working to restore the drilling moratorium everywhere;

* Second, we are working to expand the country’s use of clean and renewable electricity and fuels and make cars go farther on a gallon of gas so we don’t need the little bit of oil we might find off Virginia.

Letter * Dear Governor Kaine: Virginia is home to many special places, and we must keep them that way. I urge you to withdraw support to drill off our coasts and advise President Obama to reinstate a moratorium on offshore drilling. Even a little progress on renewable energy or fuel efficiency would replace the 3-days-worth of oil and 7-days-worth of gas you predict for this area. Drilling off of Virginia will not lower gas prices or provide enough fuel to meet domestic needs. More importantly, it hinders our efforts to move towards renewable energy and deepens our dependence on fossil fuels. We need to get higher mileage for our cars. We need to retrofit buildings for energy efficiency. We need to build more mass transit across the state. Please stop the process of leasing the 3 million acres off the coast of Virginia for all these reasons. Sincerely,
