New Energy Future

The way we produce and use energy in Virginia has severe impacts on our environment and our public health.  From the air and water pollution caused by proposed coal-fired power plants, to the toxic nuclear waste created by the state's nuclear power plants, to the wasted energy that results from us not taking advantage of energy efficient technologies, it is obvious that we could be doing better.

Environment Virginia is working to create a new energy future for Virginia, in which we are more reliant on clean, homegrown energy sources like wind and solar, and in which we take advantage of the energy effecient technologies that exist to help lower our overall energy demand.

We can reduce our dependence on foreign oil without threatening our beaches and natural places. Plug-in hybrid cars that go 100 miles on a gallon of gas already exist. Congress should tell the auto industry to make vehicles that get at least 40 miles per gallon. More

Saving Energy

EnergyStar-certified homes use 30 percent less energy than other homes. Lawmakers should create incentives to save energy, to help cut energy use in homes and businesses by 10 percent. More

Clean Energy For America

We can supply power to millions of homes and businesses by harnessing homegrown energy from the sun, wind and crops. That’s why we are calling on Congress to require that utilities generate at least 20 percent of America’s electricity from renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020 and to extend tax incentives that help homes and businesses make the switch to renewable energy.
