Recent buildings could cut global warming

Virginians will have more efficient homes and spend less on their utility bills if the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development approves the Environment Virginia-backed 2009 IECC model building code.

We’re working to help win approval of the new code, which will make our homes and buildings 12 to 15 percent more energy-efficient. To make the case for new building codes, we released a report in May, titled “Building a Better Future: Moving Toward Zero Pollution with Highly Efficient Homes and Businesses.”

“Adoption of the code is the first step toward realizing a future that is powered by clean, homegrown energy,” said Advocate J.R. Tolbert. “By passing the standard, Virginia will be making a down payment on solving global warming and saving consumers money, all while jumpstarting our clean energy economy.”

Looking forward: Securing a conservation majority

As Virginia gears up for another election, this time for governor and the entire House of Delegates. The outcome of this election will determine the foreseeable future for conservation efforts in the Commonwealth.

There are two routes we could take—one is down the path to a clean energy future powered by renewable energy and energy efficiency. The other is down a road that will deepen our dependence on dirty coal and oil and exacerbate our contribution to global warming.

For this reason, Environment Virginia determined that we could not sit on the sidelines in the 2009 election. We are committed to finding sustainable answers to meeting our energy needs, and are supporting a slate of candidates for the House of Delegates that share our commitment. Please visit our Web site, www.EnvironmentVirginia.org, to see which candidates we have endorsed in the upcoming election.
