Today at the Savannah Technical College, President Barack Obama toured classrooms training students to install insulation and other efficient technologies and delivered remarks highlighting the proposed Home Star program for residential energy efficiency retrofits. Home Star was included in the Senate Democratic leadership’s Jobs Agenda for this spring, and is also being considered in the House for inclusion in job creation legislation. The program would provide rebates to consumers who invest in new energy efficient appliances, weatherize their homes, or purchase other efficient technologies for their home. Environment Virginia Advocate J.R. Tolbert, released the following statement in response:
Richmond, VA – The Clean Energy Works campaign, a grassroots coalition of millions of Americans urging Congress to pass a clean energy jobs plan, today releases a set of studies underscoring how comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation can renew Virginia’s economy with new clean energy jobs. The coalition also highlighted a new poll underscoring strong public support for Congressional action. Clean Energy Works’ members include labor, faith, conservation, veterans, youth, environmental, community groups and businesses that are committed to more clean energy jobs, less pollution and a more secure America.
Charlottesville, VA ? Between 2010 and 2030, Virginia will spend as much as $738.1 billion on oil, coal, and other fossil fuels ? 3.2 times the total earnings of all Virginia workers in 2007. At the same time, pollution from fossil fuels is the number one source of air and global warming pollution and a leading source of water pollution, said Environment Virginia in their new report.
“Today, Congress took an historic step toward a new clean energy economy and a healthy future in passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act by a vote of 219 to 212. Environment Virginia applauds Representatives Boucher, Connolly, Moran, Perriello and Scott for voting on a future built on clean, homegrown renewable energy.
Richmond, Virginia – This Earth Day, America has a real opportunity to harness the power of clean energy to transform our economy and protect the earth, according to Environment Virginia. The group is calling on clean energy supporters around the country to postpone their Earth Day celebrations for five minutes today and first ask their member of Congress to rebuild the economy with clean energy and stop global warming.
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives Energy & Commerce Committee and the Energy & Environment Subcommittee began legislative hearings on the massive energy bill the committee and then full House is slated to consider shortly in response to President Obama’s call for legislation to rebuild the economy with clean energy and stop global warming, according to Environment Virginia.
Virginia can start to transition to a clean energy economy, stop global warming and protect the environment with funding from President Obama’s proposed federal budget for 2010.
Both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed an economic recovery package containing $78.6 billion in clean energy, energy efficiency, and green transportation funding.
The Senate has approved their economic recovery bill, which contains at least $70 billion in funding for wind, solar, energy efficiency and public transit.
Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that the department will extend the public comment period on the draft five year plan for oil and gas development that the Bush administration put in place in its last days in office.
