| Boston, MA - Today Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced the Department of the Interior’s final approval of the Cape Wind offshore wind project off the coast of Massachusetts. The announcement means that by 2012, Massachusetts residents could be the first in the nation to receive energy from offshore wind power. | |
| Richmond, VA – Today, Vice President Joe Biden and Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced a new ‘Retrofit Ramp-Up’ program that will give 25 communities, including Charlottesville, VA grants for innovative retrofit projects. The projects will receive a combined $452 million and it is estimated they will create 30,000 jobs over the next few years, while saving consumers $100 million per year and leveraging $2.8 billion in other investment. Charlottesville’s LEAP program will receive a portion of the $20 million granted to the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance through the program. Environment Virginia applauded the Administration’s action as another major victory from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s $80 billion in clean energy investment. | |
| Richmond – This has been a busy week for the future of Virginia’s energy portfolio. On Wednesday, President Obama announced Virginia’s coastlines would be opened to offshore oil and gas drilling. His announcement was met with praise from Governor McDonnell and other political figures in the state. As part of the governor’s response he restated his core belief that this offshore drilling is a core part of making Virginia the East Coast leader in energy development, but other actions leave some Virginians wondering what kind of energy the governor wants to see in Virginia. | |
| Richmond – As part of a 40 day countdown to Earth Day, environmental groups and local activists gathered outside of Senator Jim Webb’s office this morning to stage a mock foot race between the United States and China. The race was held to demonstrate that the United States is falling behind China as the world leader in renewable energy technology. | |
| Richmond, VA—Today the Solar Energy Industries Association and Environment Virginia released a new poll and data regarding large-scale solar projects in the U.S. The poll shows more support for solar and wind as the nation’s top energy priority than any other technologies. In addition, the group announced that two new pilot plants came on line in 2009 with more than 100 utility-scale solar projects under development. These projects represent more than 17 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, enough to provide clean power to 3.4 million households and to create more than 100,000 American jobs. Forty years after the first Earth Day, these leaders urged the Senate to stop delaying and start moving to clean energy and cut the carbon pollution that threatens America’s economy and security and the climate. | |
| Today at the Savannah Technical College, President Barack Obama toured classrooms training students to install insulation and other efficient technologies and delivered remarks highlighting the proposed Home Star program for residential energy efficiency retrofits. Home Star was included in the Senate Democratic leadership’s Jobs Agenda for this spring, and is also being considered in the House for inclusion in job creation legislation. The program would provide rebates to consumers who invest in new energy efficient appliances, weatherize their homes, or purchase other efficient technologies for their home.
